NEWARK, N.J. – James A. Scarpone, Esq., a veteran business litigator who’s represented plaintiffs and defendants in federal and state courts for more than four decades, on June 1 is joining one of New Jersey’s premier litigation boutiques, Robertson, Freilich, Bruno + Cohen, LLC (“RFBC”), Irv Freilich, Esq., the firm’s managing member announced.
“We’re fortunate to have a business litigator of Jim’s skill and stature as a member of the firm,” Freilich said. “Our growing litigation practice is complemented by his courtroom skills and business acumen and we know him as one of the region’s best trial attorneys.”
“A proactive, well-known litigation boutique like Robertson, Freilich, Bruno & Cohen is a perfect match for my business litigation counsel, in and out of the courtroom,” Scarpone said.
Scarpone, a 1966 graduate of Columbia Law School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Rutgers University. His late father, James “Battling Jimmy” Scarpone, who boxed professionally as a lightweight in the early 1900’s, fought three world champions and is listed in the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame.
At Rutgers, Scarpone began a lifelong friendship with RFBC’s named member, William W. Robertson, Esq., a former U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey. “Jim played football in college, wrestled competitively, and continued to wrestle for years just to stay in shape,” Robertson said. “The tenacity and intensity that made him a great athlete is mirrored in his practice and evident in his courtroom skills.”
Scarpone who said he’s been, “trying cases since the first week after being sworn in,” had been a partner at Hannoch Weisman; Hellring; Lindeman & Landau; and his own firm before joining RFBC.
In more than 41 years of legal practice, Scarpone has handled professional malpractice cases for and against lawyers, accountants, architects and engineers. He’s also represented clients on both sides of insurance, construction, trademark infringement, family business, arbitration, bankruptcy, breach of contract, business tort and employment cases.
“My specialty has always been representing clients in disputes about money,” Scarpone said, noting that approximately 70 percent of his referrals over the years have been from other attorneys. Publicity averse, in his hundreds of representations, including one in which more than a quarter billion dollars was at stake, Scarpone said he never issued a news release. “I go to court and represent my client. That’s what I do,” he explained.
